About Me
- About Me: Their parents pay me money to fill their heads with all manner of wild stuff, most of it, hopefully, true: Theology, philosophy, history, literature, the arts, worldview analysis... It just don't get much better. Well, if every class were a musical performance that might make it a bit better. But let's not press too insistently upon the boundaries of reality, agreed?
Music
- Favorite Artists: Hundreds.
- Favorite Albums: Hundreds.
- Favorite Genre: The more thoughtful, mature, organic sort of Christian alternative music. Contemporary worship music. Classic choral worship, from the late Middle Ages through the 20th century, but especially the golden age of the Baroque. The Western academic tradition in general (what most people mean by the term "classical"). Classic acoustic jazz, folk, folk-rock, alt-country, adult alternative. Bruce Springsteen is the Boss, and the Vigilantes of Love are the only band that i have been willing to represent with a bumper sticker on my truck.
- Favorite Songs: Too many to list.
- Songs for Roadtrips: Not songs, but albums: Jackson Browne: Running on Empty (1977), Late for the Sky (1974), For Everyman (1973), Saturate Before using (1971)... The Cowboy Junkies: The Trinity Session (1987)... Boston: Boston (1976), Don't Look Back (1978)... The Eagles: their 2-disc retrospective... Syd Straw: Surprise (1989)... Bruce Springsteen: his entire body of work, most notably The Wild, the Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle (1973), Born to Run (1975), Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)... Crosby, Stills and Nash: self-titled debut (1969), Deja Vu (1970)... Neil Young: Harvest (1972), Zuma (1975), Decade (1977)... R.E.M: all of their recordings between Chronic Town (1982) and Green (1989)... The Connells: Darker Days (1985)... Emmylou Harris: just about anything the woman has ever recorded... Alison Krauss: ditto.
- Songs I hate: Why would someone go to the trouble of filling in this box?
- Band I wish I was in: My own *sigh*... The Substructure.
Television
- Favorite Shows: Since, inexplicably, they have not included a category called "Analysis and critique of the very idea of television," i'm afraid i'm going to have to use this blank for that. One of the most disquieting symptoms of the decay of our civilization is the amount of time that people spend in watching TV, rather than reading or investing in other people's lives. It's a disease. Now, me: I own a television. It sits in my living room, but that's only because there's not another room in the house where it might conveniently be used--i don't like the idea of a living area being dominated by an entertainment vehicle. Living areas are for the sharing of lives, the exchange of ideas and the building of relationships. At any rate, i don't use the TV to watch television programs. I use it as a monitor for watching videos, either by myself or with my students. I am blissfully unaware of what's on TV these days. I don't even know what channels i get. Do forgive me for the slight tinge of pride you may have detected in my being able to say that. :) Most people can't say that.
- Favorite Channels: See above. [grins from ear to ear]
More About Me
- Nicknames: Butch. Hoss. Studs. Killer.
- Nationality: The Master Race (that was a joke! calm down. jeepers.)
- Religion: This term ("religion") is one of the most oft-abused and frequently misunderstood in cultural history. I don't have a "religion"--got no use for 'em. I view the Bible (Old and New Testaments) as offering the most accurate framework for the understanding of reality, and believe that Jesus Christ is the one unique avenue to moral purification, spiritual healing, fullness of life and a relationship with God. I guess that makes me a "Christian." Is that a "religion"? No. It's just reality.
- Heroes: The little guy. You know, the underdog... the poor, the downtrodden, the unsung. The salt of the earth. Those people. Vive la revolution!
- Interests: Music: Renaissance to R.E.M. ("R.E.M." being defined as "a truly groundbreaking band that existed from 1980 up to about 1990, at which point they suddenly discovered how much money they could make if they stopped playing real music") to Miles Davis to Bruce Springsteen to the 2nd Chapter of Acts to the City on a Hill series. Books. Lots of books. Teaching. Writing. Challenging people who belong to Jesus to dig below the surface of what's been presented to them as truth, dig down to the roots, dig down to the foundations.
- Expertise: Cultural and worldview analysis through the lens of Scriptural truth. Equipping the next generation of spiritual warriors with intellectual skills and spiritual sensitivities that will do them good service on the battlefield. Puns that will make you want to gnaw off your limbs. Note irrelevant to this particular box: I can't believe how goofy the options are that they give you under "occupation" and "industry." Don't let the system do your thinking for you, guys!
- Occupation: Research and development
- Industry: Mind-expansion
Books
- Favorite Books: I'm glad that they offer a section for "books." I only regret that they must also offer a section for "television," which i'd be willing to bet is more often filled out by people on this site than the section on books. *sigh*
- Favorite Authors: You don't have the attention span and i haven't got the time. :) Lots of classic literature, poetry, fiction, etc. Philosophy, science, comparative religion, history, biography, social and cultural analysis, theology, church history. And, of course, the Bible, in numerous translations. I guess i might have identified my favorite author as "God," although that seems irreverent, somehow.
